We Are Green

In 1987, Mr. Macdonald took his first class on green building with the renowned Professor Frank Schiavo of San Jose State University and the course textbook was The Passive Solar Energy Book by Edward Mazria. Mr. Macdonald has been studying these principles since before Build It Green or LEED existed and currently runs Active Solar Panels on his own home.

There are generally two types of recycling: post-consumer and pre-consumer (also called "post-industrial"). Post-consumer recycling is the most heavily practiced recycling wherein the materials being recycled have already passed through the consumer market and are re-constituted into a different consumer product.

Pre-consumer recycling refers to the reuse of industrial by-products: in other words, materials used during manufacturing - which are not, themselves, consumer goods - are being recycled. Pre-consumer recycled materials can be broken down and remade into additional manufacturing materials or can be sold as-is to third party buyers. The iron-ore slag used to make mineral wool insulation and the fly ash used to make concrete are two examples of pre-consumer/post-industrial recycled materials.

While post-consumer recycling is easiest, taking advantage of products made from seldom-used waste materials - especially in an area where recycled products are hard to find - is another avenue of being green. At Tracery Builders, we are committed to using pre-consumer recycled building materials whenever possible for remodeling and new-construction building materials. One such product is recycled denim insulation:

Denim insulation is made from 100% pre-consumer/post-industrial cotton fiber and denim (i.e. manufacturing scraps) acquired from clothing manufacturers. It's 100% safe (formaldehyde and mineral microfiber free), easy to handle, and easily recyclable when/if it's ever removed. As an added bonus, it's also excellent for sound dampening!

  • Passive House is both a building energy performance standard and a set of design and construction principles used to achieve that standard. The Passive House standard is the most stringent building energy standard in the world: buildings that meet the standard use 80 percent less energy than conventional equivalent buildings, and provide superior air quality and comfort. A systems-based design strategy carefully models and balances a comprehensive set of factors including heat emissions from appliances and occupants-to keep the building at comfortable and consistent indoor temperatures throughout the heating and cooling seasons. Continuous mechanical ventilation of fresh-filtered air, assures superb air quality.

    What is LEED?

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. From individual buildings and homes, to entire neighborhoods and communities, LEED is transforming the way built environments are designed, constructed, and operated. Comprehensive and flexible, LEED addresses the entire lifecycle of a building.
LEED® is an internationally recognized green building program.
It provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
